Don Durnil joined Circle Safety & Health Consultants in September 2008, following a thirty-three year career which spanned Navy Civil Service and safety consulting for two private firms. He holds a B.S. in Engineering Operations from North Carolina State University. Don has been an ISO 9000 Lead Auditor and for many years has managed Safety and Health programs at a large Navy industrial facility as well as an overseas Naval Air Station. While serving as Assistant Safety Manager for six years at the Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy, he became familiar with European safety and health standards and how to adapt safety management systems to incorporate features of both U.S. and European standards. He served over a year as the “Western Team” lead on the Transportation Security Agency OSH Services contract and nearly a year as an assessor/implementation lead for OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). He is a Board Certified Safety Professional with a specialty in Engineering Aspects and is a professional member of the American Society of Safety Engineers. He has served twice as president of the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers and was chosen “Supervisor of the Year” while safety manager for the Naval Aviation Depot, Cherry Point, N.C. He has served as an expert witness for various safety and mishap cases.

He specializes in safety audits, mishap investigation, ionizing radiation, machine guarding, hearing and sight conservation, weight handling, ergonomics, lead, asbestos, lockout/tagout programs, confined space entry, and classroom instruction, as well as various safety and health management systems.

He has been assigned responsibilities in the TSA Team’s Southeast region.
